In a world where information is available to us instantly and on demand I am drawn towards the unknown and the unknowable. My goal is to paint compelling mysteries; to construct scenes that can elicit a deepening response upon repeated views.
My approach is to create compositions using found photos or photos in which I can remove any personal connection as a subject. I am drawn towards figures that are obscured or unknown and whose position within their environment can be altered and made subject to debate.
Recently I started experimenting with incorporating an AI (a deep neural network) into my process. The AI takes a photographic composition that I intend to paint, and it applies the style of one of my previous paintings to it. This practice has challenged me to undertake new complexities and broaden my skill, and it affords opportunities for creating benevolent accidents in a way that extends and complements both my interests and process.
